As a *hoa* (Vietnamese-Chinese) who was never fully taught the beauty of Chinese calligraphy, I am in the process of discovering my Chinese heritage. Chinese Hanzi characters formed the basis for both Japanese Kanji and Korean Hanja character sets.
Another contribution of Chinese culture to the East Asian world is Chinese New Year, otherwise known as Lunar New Year in my family's home country of Viet Nam, but also in Korea, Japan, Thailand, Burma, and Laos. This is a beautiful Hanzi character symbolising the Chinese/Lunar New Year, and its traditional red backdrop make an excellent greeting for the season.
